With the launch of the Android 12 Developer Preview relatively around the corner, we’ve discovered that Pixel phones might be gaining a new face-based choice for Auto-Rotate.

On Pixel phones today, along with Android devices in general, you’re able to have your display orientation turn to match your gadget’s orientation. For instance, you may search YouTube in picture mode, then turn your device to one side or the other to optimize the video.

There’s an interesting peculiarity with this experience, or possibly you can think of it as an inequality between what phones expect and how humans act. Too many of us have a practice of using our phones in bed– despite Google’s Digital Wellbeing efforts. And if you do this while laying on your side, both your head and your phone will be relied on the side.

With Auto-Rotate as it works today, your phone will go into landscape mode, where you ‘d want it to remain in portrait mode for simpler reading. With Android Pie, phones acquired a handy button to turn the display that appears when your phone is turned to the side and Auto-Rotate is off. Those who utilize their phones while laying on their sides likely keep Auto-Rotate off and just utilize this button when they require to rotate the screen.

According to details seen by 9to5Google, Android 12 is set to bring an optional, face-based variation of Auto-Rotate to Pixel phones. In essence, your phone will use your front-facing video camera to inspect if anybody is taking a look at the screen, and if so, which way their head is turned. Likely the tech behind this is a simplified variation of the face-shape-recognition capabilities of apps like Snapchat and Google Duo. For obvious personal privacy factors, this camera-based check will take place completely on your gadget and will not conserve or send your image anywhere.

It’s possible that this face-based version of Auto-Rotate might release as a more comprehensive Android 12 feature, but for now we believe that it will be solely for Pixel phones, a minimum of in the brief term. As has taken place prior to with features spotted in newer variations of Android, face-based Auto-Rotate could get here as part of a Pixel Feature Drop.
